What Is the Firefly Festival?
Held each year from mid-May to mid-June, the Firefly Festival is a short seasonal window when the forests of Bhandardara come alive with bioluminescent fireflies, blinking in harmony during their mating season. The effect is magical—trees glitter as if strung with fairy lights, and the air pulses with silent rhythm under the moonlit sky.
It’s a rare natural phenomenon, available only for a few weeks a year, making it a bucket-list experience for nature lovers, families, photographers, and adventurers alike.
Why Fireflies?
Fireflies, or “Jugnu” as they’re fondly known in India, emit natural light through bioluminescence to attract mates. Come May and June, Bhandardara becomes their playground, as thousands of fireflies perform synchronized dances in the forests and valleys – a visual symphony that lasts only for a few weeks each year.
